1. Zero Waste & Circular Economy

1. research line SusBioComp

Leveraging biomass for the creation of biocomposite materials presents a significant opportunity to mitigate waste and foster a circular economy. The team focuses on harnessing predominantly non-edible natural resources to formulate eco-friendly bioplastics, thereby advancing sustainable practices.

Key objectives:
• Formulate strategies for converting diverse types of biomass into biodegradable bioplastics.

• Strive to find solutions that achieve zero waste production.

• Develop processes that enable the efficient utilization of resources and energy.

2. Food Production & Resource Efficiency

2. research line SusBioComp
Biocomposite materials, including films, hydrogels, foams, and particles, play a significant role in enhancing food production. Our group’s primary objective is to develop innovative biocomposites that address various aspects of agriculture such as soil improvement, crop protection, biostimulation, and the mitigation of biotic and abiotic stresses. By leveraging these biocomposites, we aim to revolutionize and optimize the agricultural industry.
Key objectives:

• Development of strategies to maximize agricultural productivity while minimizing resource utilization.

Substituting petroleum-derived plastics in agriculture with bio-based and biodegradable alternatives.

• Creation of active materials that offer plant protection, biostimulation, and enhanced resistance to stress.

3. Food Protection & Extension of Shelf-life

3. research line SusBioComp
Biocomposite materials offer a range of applications in the development of packaging and coatings designed to protect food and prolong its shelf life. Our group is dedicated to advancing these materials and creating active solutions that enhance food preservation properties. By incorporating antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-blocking capabilities, we aim to extend the shelf life of food while ensuring the preservation of its essential nutrients.
Key objectives:

• Development of innovative packaging and coating solutions that ensure optimal protection for food products.

Substitution of petroleum-derived plastics. with bio-based and biodegradable alternatives.

• Development of active materials for extending food shelf life, thereby contributing to reducing food waste and enhancing sustainability.
